Land Care
Birds of Dingo Lane
The number and variety of birds in a good indication of the environmental health of at the land. Historically, the birdlife of North-East New South Wales exhibited high species density being at the junction of the distributions of temperate rainforest (Tumbunan), tropical rainforest (Irian), and temperate eucalyptus forest and woodland (Bassian) faunas. Widespread clearing of forest to develop pasture-based agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century undoubtedly impacted on this diversity of birdlife. We hope to document increased biodiversity in our birdlife at Dingo Lane as our ecological restoration efforts progress. Restoration of rainforest and wetland habitats over the past 10 years is starting to show results by providing improved habitat and food supply. It will take much longer to establish new nesting hollows. Protection of all remaining old trees including dead ones together with installation of artificial nesting boxes is a priority.
So far, we have identified 80+ bird species resident or visiting Dingo Lane Farms. With the help of our keen photographer neighbour, Sue McLeod, we are trying to photograph as many of them as we can – it is a challenge. We plan to keep the updated lists and photos on this page as a record.
